How I’m Reclaiming My Entrepreneurial Life as a Single Mother: My Guide to Balancing Motherhood and Business

Life was a lot different before I became a mother. I was a serial entrepreneur and a medical professional with flexibility, picking up contracts when I wanted to work and taking time off to explore the world when I didn’t. I ran two businesses—a candle company and a financial coaching firm—and found a rhythm that let me enjoy the best of both worlds.

Now, I’m a mom, and not just any mom—a single mom. Balancing the needs of my daughter with the demands of work is no small feat. How do I manage being both a boss and a mom? From paying for childcare to providing everything a child needs, there are so many things to juggle, especially with my businesses temporarily on the back burner. They may not be active, but they’re never out of mind. I’m constantly thinking of how I can transition back into full-time entrepreneurship and reclaim the flexibility that allows me to spend more time with my daughter.

Thankfully, my therapist has been a guiding light, helping me find practical ways to make this happen. I’m sharing my journey here—hopefully, these strategies resonate with other moms out there who dream of balancing family life with entrepreneurship.

1. Utilize My Support System

I used to think I had to do everything alone, but one of the best decisions I made was leaning into my support network. Asking for help—whether it’s a babysitter for a few hours or assistance with business tasks like packaging orders—has been a game-changer. There’s real strength in knowing when to reach out.

2. Scheduling My Time

With a full-time job from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., evenings are when I focus on my daughter and carve out some entrepreneurial time. I set a flexible schedule that I try to follow as closely as possible. Here’s an example:

  • 5:00-6:00 p.m. – Make dinner and play with my daughter
  • 6:00-6:30 p.m. – Eat dinner together
  • 6:30-7:00 p.m. – Learning activities or a walk
  • 7:00-8:00 p.m. – Bath, book, and bedtime routine
  • 8:30-11:00 p.m. – Business time: emails, social media posts, candle-making, and more

Not every evening is perfect, but having a structure helps me make the most of my time, and the routine creates consistency for both my daughter and me.

3. Setting Boundaries

My schedule may not always be perfectly followed, but it’s my guide. I try my best not to deviate from it unless absolutely necessary (and sometimes, “necessary” means a surprise cuddle session!). By setting boundaries around work and personal time, I ensure that I’m present both as a mom and as a businesswoman.

4. Always Be Learning

Learning never stops, and it’s one of the ways I’m preparing to step back into my businesses full-time. Whether I’m doing laundry, driving, or cooking, I’m listening to podcasts, audiobooks, or having conversations with fellow entrepreneurs. This ongoing learning keeps me inspired and helps me refine my vision for the future.

These steps may seem simple, but they’re helping me steadily rebuild my business life while keeping my priorities in order. My journey back to full-time entrepreneurship is far from over, but I know I’m taking the steps I need to get there—one day at a time.

If you’re in a similar situation, know that you’re not alone, and you can find ways to keep your dreams alive while nurturing your family. Take it from me, a healing mama with big dreams—you can do it too.
